“The Red Scarf Girl” is a historical memoir by a young Chinese girl, Ji-li Jiang, living through Mao’s Cultural Revolution in China. She got the inspiration for the book during her time by reading Anne Frank’s Diary, a book that children also study in the British curriculum.
As they read the book, children learn about the Six Fingers ransacking houses, accompanied by red guards in search of what were considered the “four old”, da-zhi-baos – handwritten wall posters decrying teachers for damaging children’s eyesight by excessive reading or rich women wearing too much make up and nice clothes.
